Coming from a multicultural nation, it is common for our society to be plagued by racism. But when we observe children of different races playing together, we will notice the absence of this pernicious problem.
Racism is a learned trait, and with that said, the HiiChiiKok Foundation is doing its part to instil unity among the people, best done at a tender age.
Nine children and the staff were invited to a dinner to celebrate the birthday of YM Tengku Puteri Puan Sri Rosmawini binti Y.A.M. Tengku Dato’ Muiz Shah who is the President of the Chinese Cheongsam Association of Malaysia.
Now that the famed Chinese traditional dress is being mentioned, it is unsurprising that all the ladies came to the event at ICC Pudu dressed in cheongsam, as was the dress code.
Everyone was treated to a sumptuous Chinese dinner, from steamed fish, lotus leaf rice, fried prawns coated with nestum, mushroom stew and more. These came in stages to keep the quality interaction alive.
But it was also a feast for the eyes as much as the tongue for the event was punctuated with various performances.
There came a performer who dazzled the crowd with the magical act of changing the colours of her mask, right in plain sight. This was followed by a solo and group singing performance.
It was already deep into the night but the event kept on giving. Every child received a gift pack consisting of chocolates, candles, candies and an ang pow valued at RM10 each.
For those who observe the event, they may assume that it was merely a night of enjoyment. But the lesson learned by the children was a subtle one.
Joy and happiness is a universal feeling shared by all, regardless of skin colour. This fun-filled event is but one of the many enriching activities that the children indulge in on a weekly basis.
