Home turns one!

The Hiichiikok Foundation Home For Children Care recently held a simple celebration to mark its first year milestone. Senior staff of the Hiichiikok Foundation, including the Home’s staff joined the 18 children for a get-together, complete with a birthday cake sporting a sole candle.

Joining in the celebration include the Foundation’s director, Lee Kok Cheng and members of the Foundation’s Operations Committee, Clifford Hii and Adeline Hii, as well as the Foundation’s manager, Diana Ooi.

The modest occasion came on the heels of a Chinese New Year gathering the Home hosted for friends and  families of the children. Visitors took the opportunity to bond with the children and explored the Home, which is located in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur. Those present include the Foundation’s Executive Committee chairman, Tan Sri Clement Hii.

The Home received its first children in the form of siblings Mohan, then 13 and Sangeeta, nine, in early March 2014. Coming from a broken family, the duo initially had problems adjusting and always talked about running away from the Home.

Ooi recalled: “At that time, the Home’s helper, Sedney, had told me that she had problems sleeping as she feared that the siblings would run away.” Eventually, the kids adapted to their new environment and became “seniors” in the home.

Along the way, many other children joined the House, with the minders being kept busy not only to ensure the children’s wellbeing but also to sort out things like the children’s school enrolment.

“This one year journey has not been smooth and easy. We stumbled and fell but we picked ourselves up each time. We are blessed to be supported by friends and caring members of the society,” said Ooi.
